Cultivate Cochrane's Passive Solar Roller
The meeting location and also the last stop on our tour will be stationed at the Cochrane Boys & Girls Club. This is where you'll also find Cultivate Cochrane's Passive Solar Roller!
The Passive Solar Roller is a portable educational greenhouse created through the passion and hard work of the dedicated volunteers at the non-profit Cultivate Cochrane Society. They use the greenhouse to further their mandate to empower people to grow their own food through demonstration and education. They collaborate to increase food sovereignty, climate resilience and wellbeing.
Some of the practices demonstrated in the Passive Solar Roller include: a vermiculture bin, companion planting, and a climate battery. The various passive and active design elements utilized in the greenhouse allowed us to maintain and harvest crops into the month of November last year without the use of any additional power sources. We have been taking our educational programming and positive message out throughout Cochrane and surrounding area for about 16 months, reaching over 1400 students in the month of October alone. Between our learning outcome based educational programming at schools and our many public appearances, we are well on the way to reaching our goal of engaging with 10,000 people within the next year.
