A Douglas Fir on the West side of Edworthy Park. At over 100 ft, this beauty is certainly in the top 5% of the tallest. Unlike certain cities on the west coast, Calgary is not really known for its tall trees, but who doesn't love learning about extremes--especially in their own neck of the woods? Whether it's the brightest star in the galaxy, or the smallest living organism, superlatives can summon childlike curiosity from all of us. Having travelled through virtually every neighbourhood and hiked all parks in my hometown of Calgary, I have always admired the beauty of the variety of trees in this city, but being the curious trivia-loving person I am, began to wonder 'where is the tallest one in this city?' I mean, there has to be one that is taller than all the rest (at least by a couple of inches, or who knows, maybe even several feet? What if this tree is secretly living its best life in your own backyard, or that of a neighbour? What if the tallest tree is the one in your local park that you enjoy sitting under on lazy summer afternoons? Regardless, we know one thig for sure: the tallest tree in Calgary definitely exists! Therefore, I would like to propose that we have a contest in finding Calgary's tallest tree. The winner will receive 2 free tickets to the Calgary Permaculture Tour 2026. Below, are the contest rules. Tallest Tree in Calgary Contest Rules: 1.) The tree does not have to be on your own property, you just have to be the first person to enter it into the contest. Please send a picture if possible. 2.) The tree will be measured from the ground which directly surrounds it. If it is on a hill, only the tree base counts as the first measuring point. 3.) Take a picture and send it in to be entered. If you are able to gauge the height, this will help, but we will have to come out regardless with our equipment to confirm actual measurements in person, and we will contact you to arrange an in-person appointment at a time that suits you. 4.) Deadline for entries is May 31, 2026. 5.) if you win this contest, you permit us to publish your first name and last initial in our announcements and any other future publications , that discuss the winning tree. Best of luck to you all!
